Power-tool maker cites rising demand, changing trend

German power-tool manufacturer Bosch is expecting to see continued sales growth in the Asia-Pacific region due to rising demand and changing customer behaviour. Werner Benade, senior vice president of Bosch Power Tools Asia-Pacific, said sales were going well and the company hoped that the market would continue to improve both in terms of demand from consumers and with regard to the construction industry. He added that the markets in |this region were becoming in-|creasingly important, and in just three years Bosch Power Tools |Asia-Pacific’s share of global sales had grown from just under 10 per cent in 2007 to almost 14 per cent, with good growth anticipated this year as well. Last year the company recorded 30-per-cent sales growth for the region. The company’s power-tool division conducted market research across the region involving more than 1,000 users. The findings show that users in such growth markets as China, India and Malaysia are looking to replace hand tools with power tools for professional results and faster work. Other interviewees are looking for durable tools that are convenient to use. Catering to this trend, Bosch Power Tools is focusing on developing a wide range of cordless tools using lithium-ion technology, offering more than 100 products this year to meet this demand. It employs more than 180 specialist engineers in its production units in Bangalore in India, Hangzhou in China and Penang in Malaysia. Benade said the new products accounted for 40 per cent of the company’s sales worldwide. The company is also focusing on a number of marketing efforts, especially student-motivation programmes. For example, each year in China the company offers more than 50 internships to university students and has been sponsoring a scholarship programme with Zhejiang University for outstanding students. "We will continue to develop local talent in countries across Asia-Pacific," he said. Recently the company organised the Asia Cordless Race 2011 in Beijing to encourage innovation among young engineers and to develop local talent in key markets including Thailand, the Philippines, China, South Korea and Malaysia. The race required students to use four Bosch lithium-ion cordless impact drivers as the vehicle’s engine.
