Fired official to get all financial benefits

The Finance Ministry plans to restore the financial benefits that were stripped from former permanent secretary Suparut Kawatkul when he was fired over allegations of wrongdoing in 2009.

Suparut, who was recently given amnesty, will receive his pension and |other privileges, said Pongpanu Svetarunda, deputy permanent secretary at the ministry.
Suparut was fired in 2009 when the National Anti-Corruption Commission accused him of wrongdoing over his appointment of four deputy directors-general at the Revenue Department when he was in charge of it in 2001.
The decision to restore the benefits was made at the Civil Service Commission’s recommendation, Pongpanu said.
Suparut has agreed to submit his resignation as soon as the ministry reinstates him. The agreement is essential in order to maintain the status of the current permanent secretary, Areepong Bhoocha-oom, he said.
Suparut will receive all privileges such as his pension and other benefits, pending approval of each by Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Pongpanu said.
