On March 19, Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc (SSI) celebrated the accumulated production at its Bang Saphan plant in Prachauab Khiri Khan of 26 million tonnes, the highest record among Thai steel companies.

Win Viriyaprapaikit, Group CEO and President, said that the figure underlines the company's market leadership position in Thailand. The plant commenced operations 20 years ago.
“This cumulative 26 million tonnes is the result of our continuous effort in technical and operational development to service the high growth in demand of domestic market. And also our effort in the innovation of premium value products (PVP). In 2011, these products accounted for 39 per cent of our total sales.”
Starting in the second quarter this year, SSI Teesside will also commence operations with annual capacity of 2.4 million tonnes.
"It is good market timing as the global economic outlook is improving and the steel industry is in an uptrend after passing the trough in the last quarter of 2011. This raw material security will enhance our sales volume to reach 2.4 million tonnes and our ability to raise the ratio of premium value products and therefore the profit margin," Win said.
SSI expects Thai flat steel market to grow by 7-8 per cent per year in the next 10 years.
