Stock market volatility could present investment opportunities

“Current market volatility could yield opportunities for investment; however, investors should undertake investment with [the benefit of appropriate] knowledge,” said Pattera Dilokrungthirapop, chief executive officer at DBS Vickers Securities (Thailand).

Global risk sentiment was thrown into disarray on Monday, with market participants keeping a close watch on political developments in Greece, Aberdeen Asset Management said in a note. 

Analysts predict that global stock markets, including Thailand’s, will continue to plunge due to uncertainty over Greece’s ability to form a national unity government and the risk of the country exiting the single European currency.

“Concerns about Greece’s possible exit from the euro zone could continue putting pressure on markets for at least two to four weeks,” Tisco Securities said in a note.

Investors may need to reduce overall investment portfolios while accumulating Thai dividend stocks with sound fundamentals, the brokerage said. 

“The current faster fund flow makes investors go on all-time alert, and we may have to look at several markets, not just one,” said DBS Vickers Securities’ Pattera.

Meanwhile, in launching its DBS Vickers Online trading portal next month, the company aims to facilitate investors with securities trade in seven stock markets in five countries: the Singapore Exchange, the Hong Kong Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, the American Stock Exchange, the Toronto Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

Within the trading portal, investors will be able to see real-time share prices for investment prioritisation, and search for analyses, news and other information with fundamental and technical indicators.

Amid this year’s market volatility, “We can screen and select stocks with attractive returns out of over 30,000 stocks in these seven markets,” Pattera said. 

About 100 retail customers are being targeted for the portal, she added.
