Thailand prepared for growing tensions

Thailand's commercial attaches in South Korea and nearby countries like Taiwan, China and Hong Kong are instructed to closely monitor growing tensions in Korean peninsula.

Srirat Rastapana, director general of the Department of Trade Negotiations, said that close consultation on the situation has been established with the Thai embassy in Seoul.
"The situation remains under control and people there remain calm. What concerns us now is the weakening Korean won, which could make (Thai products) more expensive," she said.
Thailand's tourism industry could also witness an impact. The Kingdom welcomed 1.1 million visitors from South Korea in 2012. In terms of arrivals, South Korea ranked 3rd after China and Japan.
According to Commerce Ministry, trade with South Korea topped US$2.4bn in the first 2 months of this year, up 14 per cent from the same period last year. Meanwhile, trade with North Korea in the corresponding period went up by 281 per cent to $21 million.
