No sign of NPL spike: BOT

Bank of Thailand still insists that there is no sign of a spike in commercial banks' non-performing loans (NPLs), despite concerns over a sharp increase in household debts.

BOT deputy governor Krirk Vanikkul said on Monday that such concerns are however serving as a warning to all that they should be cautious in spending.
He also insisted that financial institutions stand ready to amend their business strategies to cope with a sudden change of tide. Commercial banks have recently strengthened the requirements for the extension of mortgage loans for the purchases of the third houses.
At present, the commercial bank sector's NPLs stood at 2.5 per cent of outstanding loans.
"Though households' ability to repay declines, the NPLs haven't yet surged," he said.
