Joint venture for RFID tags

Stars Microelectronics (Thailand) has joined with Japanese company SinfoniaTechnology to set up a subsidiary to manufacture radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.

The new subsidiary, SS RFID in Bang Pa-In Industrial Estate, expects to produce RFID tags for the global market, targeting revenue of Bt100 million by the end of next year and producing about 500 million tags in the next five years. It also expects to list on the stock market within three years.
Polsak Lertputipinyo, chief executive officer of SS RFID and of Stars Microelectronics (Thailand), said the joint venture had a capital investment of Bt100 million, at the ratio of 75 per cent from and the rest from Sinfonia Technology.
The new company will utilise know-how from the Japanese company to set up an RFID inlay tag bonding machine, which be able to produce a world-record 30,000 RFID tags per hour and reduce operating costs by 50 per cent.
“I think that the RFID market now has high potential since the demand exceeds supply. The demand doubles every year. RFID tags are in high demand in the retail, distribution, transport and healthcare industries,” Polsak said.
