Chief marketing officer Wanna Swuddigul said adding more online channels was a priority for Tesco Lotus as Thais spend more time online and do more e-commerce. Tesco has invested a lot in establishing the necessary infrastructure to support its online business.
At www.tescolotus.com, more than 20,000 products are available.
The top three categories for which people like to shop online are children’s products, beverages, and household products.
“We have 10 stores in Bangkok and three in the provinces functioning as distribution centres for delivering products to online customers.
We guarantee the availability of products customers purchased online,” Wanna said.
She said the average value of an online purchase was three times that of an offline purchase at a Tesco Lotus store.
On average, its customers shop online once every two weeks, and they prefer to pay with their credit cards via an online payment method.
“We just launched a pay-on-delivery service, for both credit-card and cash payment, but most of our customer still pay with their credit cards over the online channel. Around 10-15 per cent of our online customers pay with cash on delivery.”
She said that once Tesco Lotus’ e-commerce mobile app was launched in the next two months, it was expected to boost online shopping a lot.
The company will also launch “Tesco Shop” on Lazada.co.th next week. This shop will offer electronic goods and other non-food products for online shopping.
“Our marketing budget for promoting online business is spent online, mainly on three types – search engines, social networks, and banner ads.
We cannot disclose the proportion of revenue between online and offline. Online is very small but is growing healthily,” Wanna said.
According to Google’s research, around 68 per cent of people viewing online adverts immediately search for more information on that particular product.
Search engines and social networks are the two main channels that online shoppers access to seek for more information on products they would like to buy rather than directly accessing the brands’ websites.
