Fibre optic link under study

Electricite du Laos (EDL), in cooperation with Sky Telecom Company and Egat International Company, will study the potential of rolling out fibre-optic cable to provide modern telecommunication links in Laos.
A memorandum of understanding for a study on such a project was signed in Vientiane by EDL managing director Sisavath Thiravong, Sky Telecom director-general Khamkhith Saysongkham, and acting Egat International president Thana Putarungsi.
The project would make use of EDL’s and Egat’s electric-transmission infrastructure to run fibre-optic cables to Laos’ provincial capitals and upgrade the country’s telecommunications infrastructure. If feasible, it will also provide an additional source of income for electricity generators as well as Sky Telecom and make the transmission lines more viable.
The MoU ceremony was attended by several top Laotian government officials.
