JAPAN-MEKONG SUMMIT KICKS OFF TODAY

The seventh Mekong-Japan Summit, which is to take place in Tokyo today, will mainly focus on building up Japan’s connections with the five Mekong countries during the approach of the Asean Economic Community.
There will also be discussions among leaders of Japan and the Mekong countries – Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam – on security, economic, environmental and cultural issues.
All five Mekong countries are also expected to adopt the “Tokyo Strategy 2015”, through which Japan will promote its partnership with the region for “quality infrastructure” investment for Asia’s future.
Bilateral meetings between Japan and each of the five Mekong countries will be held separately and a memorandum of intent on the development of the Dawei special-economic-zone project in Myanmar will be signed by Japan, Myanmar and Thailand.
