HCM City plans high-technology park on 200 hectares

HO CHI MINH City plans to give priority to advanced technology and "clean industry" investment by building a new high-technology park.

Duong Minh Tam, deputy head of the management board of Sai Gon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP), said construction on the park was scheduled to begin next year and be completed in 2020.
The park will be built on 200 hectares of land in District 9’s Long Phuoc Ward.
The park will support the city’s economic restructuring plan, which focuses on the advanced-technology industry.
Tam said the project was expected to create the most favourable conditions to exploit the city’s potential for high technology and support the SHTP. The park will involve universities, institutes and enterprises, and form a basic model for an intellectually driven economy in the future.
The park, which will be named Science Technology Park, will be built to meet the socio-economic development demand in the city.
To take full advantage of the city’s technology potential, the project, with oversight from SHTP’s management board, will attract investment projects that apply high technology, conduct research on new technologies, and build research centres. Products will be related to information technology, renewable energy and universal technology, among others.
SHTP has attracted 80 projects with total investment of US$4.3 billion (Bt152 billion). Of that number, there are 49 domestic-invested projects with a total of $801 million and 31 foreign-direct invested projects with total investment of $3.5 billion.
Last year, the park attracted 48 per cent of Ho Chi Minh City’s foreign direct investment.
During the first eight months of the year, export value from the park was estimated at $2.93 billion, growth of 68 per cent compared with the same period last year.
