Indonesia seeks to be regional logistics hub

Indonesia is looking to take over the role of its neighbouring countries as Southeast Asia’s main logistics hub as the country launched on Thursday its first-ever bonded logistics centres that will ease the flow of basic materials into and out of the country.
As many as 11 centres were simultaneously inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in a ceremony that took place at a centre operated by Cipta Krida Bahari in Cakung, North Jakarta. In a speech, Jokowi said Indonesia, as the biggest economy in the region, had the potential to replace Singapore and Malaysia as Southeast Asia’s logistics centre.
“This kind of logistics centres must be established on every island and in every province [in Indonesia],” he told the audience. – The Jakarta Post

50 new logistics centres to open in 2017: minister
The Indonesian government intends to open 50 more bonded logistic centres (PLBs) next year. The new PLBs are part of an effort to transform Indonesia into an emerging logistics hub in the Asia-Pacific region and are a follow-up to the 11 logistic centres recently inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
The PLBs were developed as part of the implementation of a second economic-policy package and expected to serve as distribution centres or warehouses for imported basic material. In this way, logistics costs will decrease significantly, Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said on Thursday. “This year, we want to complete the 11 PLBs and synchronise the system with the Custom and Excise Office. Next year we are targeting 50 more PLBs. – The Jakarta Post
