Tourism workers urged to play security role

Tourism workers urged to play security role

THE DEPARTMENT of Tourism has asked tourism workers to play a role in protecting tourists by remaining observant while working with the country’s 64 associations to spur growth in the key sector.

“From now on, the department will increase its active role by organising training to upgrade the skills for tourism personnel working in all areas of Thailand so they are more observant and always vigilant. If they happen to see irregularities … they will automatically inform law enforcement officials,” said Wanasiri Morakul, director general of the Department of Tourism.
She said the recent attacks in seven Southern provinces had encouraged people in the industry to work closer together and the tourism industry looked more promising than ever.

‘Greater synergy’
“There has been a greater synergy among tourism stakeholders, tourism entrepreneurs, [tourism] associations, hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, and tourism service providers to upgrade the security measures for all visiting tourists,” she said.
She said the department had begun strengthening its collaboration with the 64 tourism associations to drive the development of high-quality community-based tourism so Thailand remains a dream destination for foreign tourists.
Thailand will host Word Tourism Day in Khon Kaen province next month and will host the WTTC Global Summit in Bangkok in April 2017.
David Scowsill, president and chief executive officer of WTTC, recently said he was confident that the situation in Thailand would return to normal very quickly, as had been the case after challenges in the past.
