SCG releases details on diversification plan into small-parcel express delivery

SIAM CEMENT GROUP yesterday disclosed details on its plan to enter the express-delivery market through a joint venture with Yamato Asia, better known as “Black Cat” in Japan.

Nithi Pattarachoke, vice president for the domestic market at SCG Cement-Building Materials, said the joint venture, SCG Express, aimed to open 110 service outlets by the end of the year.
The company is introducing its service in Bangkok and vicinity (including Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan), with its first service centre already up and running in Bang Sue.
The joint venture represents a diversification of SCG, Thailand’s leading industrial conglomerate, into the express-delivery industry.
SCG Express offers four types of service: TA-Q-BIN (express small-parcel delivery to and from homes); Document TA-Q-BIN (express courier service for documents and small parcels to and from offices); TA-Q-BIN Collect (payment upon delivery); and Cool TA-Q-BIN (the first and only temperature-controlled delivery service in the market).
Nithi said the market value of e-commerce had grown by more than 12 per cent in 2016 from the preceding year, resulting in increased demand for express delivery in the domestic market. Recognising an ample business opportunity that this industry has to offer, SCG joined forces with Yamato, a leading Japanese specialist in small-parcel delivery.
“The partnership creates a synergy of our strengths,” Nithi said. “SCG is outstanding in terms of innovations and quality while Yamato Asia has solid expertise in small-parcel delivery.
“In Japan, the company has won the highest customer satisfaction. For more than two years, it has worked closely with SCG to research the Thai market and study Thai consumers in order to determine the best approach to address consumers’ needs and raise the standards of delivery service here.
“A budget of Bt633 million has been set aside as the initial investment for this joint venture.”
Based on Yamato’s internationally recognised standards for parcel-delivery service, especially its polite and service-minded staff, the know-how from Japan has been localised and passed on to sales drivers of SCG Express.
One of the four core services, Cool TA-Q-BIN, has two available options for low-temperature parcel delivery. The first option is a temperature range between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius, and the second, for frozen items, provides temperatures below minus-15 degrees.
Parcels are accepted at sizes up to 160 centimetres in any of the three dimensions and up to a maximum weight of 25 kilograms, with prices starting from Bt40.
The first service point of SCG Express in Bang Sue is a 38-square-metre office in 26A Building, SCG headquarters. Interested customers can either seek the service in person at the service points or through service agents or contact the call centre.
For more information or to book a service, customers can also visit www.scgexpress.co.th or use the SCG Express app, which is now available for both for iOS and Android mobile devices.
“We will continue to build awareness of SCG Express among our key target groups, namely online sellers in business-to-customer segment, online buyers and sellers who are engaged in customer-to-customer transactions, and the general public,” Nithi said.
“Our communication will be focused on the strengths in terms of service quality and attentive care to maximise customer satisfaction, as well as a readily strong team of more than 130 sales drivers with the capability to handle up to 5,000 parcels a day.”
