
Sauwanee Thairungroj, president at UTCC, said that there remained concerns for corruption in the future, although June’s index for the country’s current corruption stayed at 53, signalling improvement from last December’s 55.
She also urged the public sector to implement more stringent legal enforcement, while society should demand increased transparency.
About 59 per cent of business operators surveyed said they did not pay kickbacks, a 8-year record high, while only 13 per cent reported having paid. Previous surveys have found, 15-18 per cent of business operators had paid kickbacks.
Foreigners surveyed appear to have not seen improvement in corruption, giving a score of 35, down from 38, and putting Thailand in 101st place in world rankings, down from 76th. Legal and political developments were factored into the scoring and ranking, Sauwanee said.
