Business booming at annual gem fair

The first day of sales at the 60th Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair netted Bt50.54 million, Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said on Friday.

The fair, organised by the ministry’s Department of International Trade Promotion, continues through Sunday (September 10) in Impact Challenger Halls 1-3 in Muang Thong Thani.
More than 900 producers, suppliers and designers of gems and jewellery from around the world are showing their latest products.
More than 20,000 buyers and importers are expected to attend.
Apiradi said Thailand’s gems and jewellery industry is considered an important and essential sector in the country’s economy.
Gems and jewellery are Thailand’s third-largest export after auto parts and electronics, and worth more than US$10 billion, she said.
Thailand last year exported $14 billion worth of gems and jewellery and in the first seven months of 2017 almost $7 billion worth, she said.
