Government, private sector in joint push for e-commerce

Government, private sector in joint push for e-commerce

THE government is implementing the digital scheme under the fifth five-year National Social and Economic Development Plan from 2017-2021 by integrating the work of different state agencies as well as the Pracha Rath scheme which also integrate the government and private sector.

Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) said yesterday at the forum “Hope to Enhance On-line Trade Chance for Thais” that Thai economic policy makers have fully supported businesses to explore opportunity via digital technology amid rapid changes of the circumstances in the global market.
He said in his opening speech at “Thailand e-Commerce Week 2017: Online! Shall We Go”, being held until November 26 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention, that the basic infrastructure of digital technology development is a crucial part of Thailand development because it is a part of government’s new platform of economic development over the next several decades or Thailand 4.0, including national broadband network, internet data centre , national telecommunication satellite, high speed internet and mobile phone signal.
“This venue is designed to support Thais at all levels of life in their transition to a global e-commerce market from general domestic e-commerce or physical trade, so our challenges are to educate and provide knowledge of digital technology in order to encourage them to optimise their daily activities and business” said Pichet.
Thailand is ranked Southeast Asia’s largest e-commerce trade nation between business to consumer (B2C) with approximately Bt700 billion in value. The value of e-commerce trade in Thai market this year would amount to more than Bt2.8 trillion in value. To make Thailand one the leading countries in Asia for e-commerce and also in global market, the government is fully accelerating the development of basic digital infrastructure and technology while the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) is encouraging businesses to embrace e-commerce in coping with the rapid changes in the global market.
Marut Buranasetkul, president of TSpace Digital Co Ltd, a subsidiary of TCC Group, said that TCC Group pays attention to digital transformation and digital contents because of the diversity of its businesses in support of sales.
Siritida Panomwon Na Ayudha, assistant governor of Payment Systems Policy and Financial Technology Group, Bank of Thailand (BOT), said that the BOT supports digital technology for electronics transactions extending from QR code to online transactions. Most people are not confident with data security. On this point, the BOT does not stay put as it has joined hands with related state agencies to develop a data security system for online transactions in order to boost people's confidence.
Jirawan Boonperm, chairman of the executive board of directors of ETDA, said that the ETDA is supporting Thailand e-Commerce Week 2017 to help educate Thais on technology transformation and be more adapted with the digital technology. ETDA will support innovation creations among businesses in order to add value to domestic products.
“Visitors will not only be briefed on e-Commerce by both Thai and international experts but will also be encouraged to initiate e-commerce businesses that conduct trading activities through mobile phone” said Jirawan.
“Thailand e-Commerce Week 2017” is also a match maker between local, China and Hong Kong traders. Small local businesses or new entrepreneurs have a chance to venture abroad while Chinese and Hong Kong traders have can make deals on good quality Thai products. Moreover, the venue will also encourage public trust in e-Commerce and business operators.”
