360,000ECD machines installed nationwide

Some 360,000 electronic data capture (ECD) machines have been set up in 160,000 shops nationwide, the Bank of Thailand reported yesterday. It plans to have 560,000 units installed by March 2018.

The Bank of Thailand’s assistant governor |of payment systems policy and financial |technology group, Siritida Panomwon Na Ayudhya, said yesterday that although the central bank had approved the use of a QR code system for payments to support the country’s move towards a cashless society, |the process to set up ECD machine was |continuing.
However, the process to set up the machines had been hit by delays after some shop owners voiced concerns about the tax linkages with the ECD system. This prompted the Bank of Thailand has to advise that ECDs and the E-Payment and PromptPay systems are connected with the tax system, Siritida said.
“ECDs, E-Payment and PromptPay are a way to move the country towards a cashless society and are not linked with to the country’s tax system,” she said.
