Data scientists in great demand: SCB

Data scientists in great demand: SCB

The profession of data scientist is a “hot career” now due to high demand in the era of the digital economy, according to the Siam Commercial Bank Economic Intelligence Centre (SCB IEC).

The numbers of data scientists in Thailand is estimated to be between 200 and 400 – far too few to fill a market demand for 2,000 persons, says SCB EIC.
And the prospects in this career are very bright, with expected growth in demand as high as 15 per cent annually for the next two to three years.
Among data scientists in Thailand, 72 per cent have masters or doctorate degrees and 61 per cent are qualified in major disciplines such as engineering, mathematics, statistics, information technology and computer science. And 51 per cent of them are graduates from local universities.
Skills needed include the ability to present data to the general public and a keen interest in data visualisation, machine learning, artificial intelligence and data mining.
Candidates must also have specialised knowledge in specific businesses or industries, as well as have knowledge in programming and coding skills, according to an SCB EIC report released on Monday.
