Construction industry facing shortages

The Thai Contractors Association is to ask Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak to speedily solve the problems in the construction industry, especially the shortage of construction materials, stemming from the implementation of several state megaprojects at the same time.

The association president, Sangworn Liptapalop, has said that the association is collecting information on the impact of the shortages on the contractors and will make a formal petition to Somkid next month. One critical problem is the shortage of raw materials as the supply fails to meet the rising demand, especially the shortage of stones, which could lead to a future shortage in the cement supply, he added.
The quarrying plants have experienced brisk customer orders, while the government process of issuing the quarrying licences takes time. This problem should be addressed, he added. Also, the construction industry is suffering a labour shortage of around 10,000 persons. – The Nation
