Banpu eyes 2 million tonnes of coal sales in Vietnam this year

Banpu, the Thailand-listed integrated energy solutions company in Asia-Pacific, continues to penetrate Vietnam’s coal market for a second consecutive year, aiming to seal more than 2 million tonnes of sales agreements with Vietnamese clients in response to the growing demand for coal.

Moreover, Banpu is unceasingly looking for new investment opportunities via its “Greener & Smarter” strategy to continuously and sustainably grow Banpu Group’s business in the future, chief executive officer Somruedee Chaimongkol said on Monday.
She said Vietnam was the 10th country that Banpu had entered with a view to capturing great business opportunity.
The Asia-Pacific nation has high-growth demand for electricity, with the Vietnamese authorities’ Power Development Plan expecting that demand will double to 130 gigawatts by 2030 in response to the country’s economic growth, while coal is still the main resource for power generation, she explained.
Apart from Banpu’s established capacity in coal production and commerce, the company set up an office in Ho Chi Min City last year to manage coal sales in Vietnam, with the office covering marketing, client services, research, sales contracts and logistics operations.
The new office also handles Banpu’s interest in wind-farm development in Vietnam as well as the study of further investment in solar farms and other power plants, the CEO added.
