Cabinet okays Bt152-billion scheme to boost economy

The Cabinet on Monday gave the green light to projects aiming to revive the economy in the fallout of Covid-19 outbreak, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said.

Up to Bt152 billion has been earmarked for the effort, of which Bt16.46 billion will be spent on creating jobs and upskilling or reskilling workers, much like the Labour Ministry’s project of supporting the recruitment of new graduates.

Another Bt45 billion will be set aside for projects aiming to strengthen grassroots economy, while Bt30 billion will be spent on stimulating local consumption. The remainder, he said, will be poured into infrastructure development.

This spending is expected to boost the gross domestic product by 0.2 per cent this year and 0.25 per cent next year. It is also expected to maintain or create 310,000 new jobs, upskill 160,000 workers, generate revenue for some 100,000 vendors and inject an additional Bt60 billion into the economy.
