CAT Telecom expands with Asia Pacific Gateway system

CAT Telecom expands with Asia Pacific Gateway system

Agency anticipates huge increase in  international bandwidth demand

To respond to higher Internet traffic in the Asia-Pacific region, CAT Telecom recently joined the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) submarine cable system.
It is expected that demand for international bandwidth for Thailand will increase over the next three years from 3 terabits per second to 15-20Tbps. Thus the CAT Internet Gateway will be the first in Thailand to expand its bandwidth with 100-gigabit-per-second technology.
Next year, the CAT Internet Gateway will have activate high-speed bandwidth at 100Gbps per port to link big content providers across the world with various international submarine cable systems in which CAT has co-invested, including APG, AAG (Asia-America Gateway), and SEA-ME-WE 4 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4).
This bandwidth expansion will serve the needs of international users and boost stability, making CAT the first in Thailand to offer Nx100Gbps connectivity through international submarine cable systems.
Dhanant Subhadrabandhu, executive vice president for marketing and sales at CAT Telecom, said data communication and Internet connectivity to overseas destinations through submarine cable systems would ensure faster and more efficient transmission than any other means.
Moreover, demand for Internet bandwidth among Thailand’s neighbouring countries that are forming new economic zones, including Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, are growing rapidly. CAT has been urged to develop more Internet transmission routes through submarine cable systems, which will allow it to serve the needs for Internet consumption.
APG is one of the highest-capacity regional submarine-cable systems, supporting the transmission of dense information in the Asia-Pacific region as well as collaborating with the AAG system efficiently.
The 10,900-kilometre APG system provides direct connectivity from Thailand to such Asia-Pacific destinations as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, mainland China, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.
The bandwidth can be expanded to a transmission speed of more than 54Tbps to support the density of data communication and Internet traffic in the Asia-Pacific region efficiently.
Through APG, as an extended submarine cable system, potential for international information connectivity is amplified, connecting CAT to a total of six active cable systems.
CAT says it is consequently the only operator in the country with access to various submarine cable routes that directly connect Thailand with the most regions in the world, and is the most responsive to the need of Internet consumption in the age of big data available on various applications.
As an extension to AAG, APG will increase Thailand’s opportunity to be Asean’s “digital hub” as well as enhance CAT’s potential and stability for holistic international communication to build confidence among Internet users and content providers who are interested in investing in Thailand as a hub in distributing information and content to users in the region, the agency says.
The APG system also supports the government’s “Thailand 4.0” policy, especially the development of smart cities where the Internet of Things is widely adopted.
APG offers sufficient capacity and consistent efficiency in information transmission at high speed for big-data analysis and IoT connectivity, CAT says.
