Festive Japanese dining at Okura

Festive Japanese dining at Okura

Japan’s Tanabata Festival in July and August derives from the celestial love story of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, represented in legend by the stars Vega and Altair, respectively.

Also known as the Star Festival because of this heavenly link, it includes decorating homes, shopping malls, and streets with colourful streamers and boys and girls writing their wishes on strips of paper that are then hung from trees and bamboo poles.
The restaurant Yamazato on the 24th floor of the Okura Prestige Bangkok is marking the occasion with traditional Gozen set lunch and Kaiseki dinner menus with a twist – some of the dishes feature decoration and ingredients with a Tanabata theme.
In addition to delicious soups and noodles and wonderfully fresh sashimi, tempura and grilled offerings, diners can enjoy a Gozen starter of mussels, shrimp and duck soup with shimeji and vegetables.
The highlights of the Kaiseki dinner include seasonal sweet fish (ayu) with octopus and starshaped okra, and a main dish of grilled scallop with asparagus.
The traditional Gozen set lunch from 11.30am to 2.30pm is Bt1,300 and Kaiseki dinner from 6 to 10.30pm is Bt4,500. Both are on offer from July 3 to 30.
