Down by the river

Down by the river

Known as one of Bangkok’s best venues for authentic Thai cuisine, the Sala Rim Naam restaurant at The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok has recently added a selection of food carts to its lunch buffet that combine classic Thai specialities with a modern reinterpretation of the traditional northern Thai-style dishes.

The restaurant is housed in an elegantly decorated pavilion built in the traditional northern Thai style and offers a spacious dining area, with indoor and al fresco seating overlooking the Chao Phraya River.

Diners can start at the appetiser station and savour Thod Mun Goong (shrimp cakes served with plum sauce), Grathong Thong Je (Herbed vegetables in crispy pastry shells), Sai Grong Khow (Isan-style pork sausage with condiments) and Mee Grob (herbed crispy noodles with minced shrimps and chicken).

Perfect for pairing with steamed rice are Naam Makham (dip with chilli, tamarind and shrimp, chicken), Gapi Kua (curried shrimp paste with coconut cream), Naam Prig Goong Sod (spicy minced prawns dip) and Naam Prig Pla Yaang (spicy chilli dip with grilled fish).

The cart bearing the main dishes has Mussamun Nuea (Southern-style beef curry with sweet potatoes and shallots), Gaeng Kua Sabpraros Gub Goong (prawn curry with pineapple), Gaeng Khiew Waan Moo Gub Khanom Jeen (green pork curry with rice noodle) and Taohu Raad Sod Graprow Hed (deep-fried tofu topped with chili, garlic mushroom and hot basil leaves).

Sweet lovers will love such traditional Thai desserts as Yok Manee (sweet tapioca peal with pandanus & grated coconut), Kha Nom Tom (glutinous flour stuffed with sweet coconut) and Kha Nom Mun (steamed tapioca with sugar and pandanus).

Guests can also enjoy a gourmet set dinner menu accompanied by the region’s most spectacular cultural performances and dance shows.

The lunch buffet is priced at Bt900-plus from Monday to Friday and Bt1,100-plus on Saturday and Sunday. The set dinner with dance show costs Bt2,450-plus per person.
