Polls show Spanish happy with monarchy

Madrid - Most Spaniards are happy with their monarchy and support it, according to surveys published in two newspapers Sunday, a day after anti-monarchy protests were held.

In a poll in the left-liberal newspaper El Pais, 49 per cent of respondents said they were in favour of a monarchy led by the future king, Felipe VI.
Thirty-six per cent said their preference was for Spain to be a republic with a president as the head of state.
Sixty-two per cent said they supported a future referendum on whether to keep the monarchy, the newspaper said.
Another survey by the conservative newspaper La Razon found that more than 77 per cent of respondents rated the leadership of King Juan Carlos as "good" or "very good."
Seventy-two per cent thought the monarchy was an important factor for political stability.
Juan Carlos, 76, on Monday announced his plans to abdicate, clearing the way for Crown Prince Felipe, 46, to become the country's next king.
