Social media group urging Thais to leave country gets over half a million followers

More than half a million Thais have joined a social media group urging people to move out of the country, reflecting dissatisfaction with the government.

“Yai Pratet Kan Ter” (Let’s move from this country) was created as a Facebook group on Saturday. By Tuesday morning the number of people who had signed up had reached around 650,000.

Most of the content in this group is about experiences of people outside Thailand, as well as advice on how to move from Thailand to other countries.

Some members shared important details, such as welfare and salary range in the countries they were currently living in.

In addition to these main contents, some posts in “Yai Pratet Kan Ter” attacked the government’s administration and showed dissatisfaction with Thailand’s welfare system.

The social media movement also raised concern about most youngsters moving out of Thailand, hampering the development of the country in the long term.

Reacting to this development, former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said the government must not overlook it, or think of it as a joke or dream of youngsters.

“My daughter who lived abroad even asked me if I wanted to move out of Thailand,” he added.
