Palace losing its beautiful ring of trees

Palace losing its beautiful ring of trees

Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra must explain why his administration’s recent beautification of the area around Chitralada Palace has resulted in trees being damaged and dying.

The BMA built an asphalt walkway around the palace along the line of trees that for decades made the area so attractive. The BMA refused to heed warnings that the operation would damage the roots of the trees.
During a rainstorm a few days ago, several of the trees fell onto the footpath and the rest are slanting in that direction. This indicates that, in building the walkway, the BMA inadvertentlycut into the roots.
Worse, in paving the pathway, the BMA has put boiling asphalt on the ground just centimetres from the trees. It will come as no surprise if the remaining trees become uprooted and some eventually die while still standing.
Whatever happened to the energetic and joyful governor who, just a few years ago, promised to bring happiness and provide a beautiful environment to the residents of Bangkok?
