Released from EU cage, Great Britain set to roar again

Re: “Obsession with sovereignty risks destroying Great Britain”, Letters, yesterday.

The letter displays a lack of understanding of the situation with the UK, the European Union and the continent of Europe.
There is nothing recent about the break-up of Great Britain, and it is not occurring because of Brexit. The Scots fought the English 800 years ago to gain independence. Since the times of William Wallace, Bannockburn in 1314 and their defeat at Culloden in 1745, hatred of Westminster has burned deeply in the hearts of Scottish nationalists. The fact that the Scottish National Party still fights for independence from England, while seeking to be governed by EU bureaucrats in Brussels, confirms this point.
Ferocious attempts in Northern Ireland to unify the island of Ireland have continued ever since the hatred of English absentee landlords, the rise of republicanism and then the IRA, who fought violently against the English.
In the last century Welsh nationalists sabotaged the water system supplying England and attacked English-owned homes in Wales.
All three nations now have a degree of independence due to devolution.
The most recent destruction of Great Britain started with the signing away of British sovereignty by prime minister John Major with the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. Tony Blair compounded this treasonous act by signing the Lisbon Treaty in 2007. Great Britain, no longer simply a member of a tariff-free European market, EEC, having subjected itself to control by the totalitarian federal European Union. Its ability to negotiate trade worldwide was banned by the EU. Brexit confirmed the wishes of the British people to extricate their country from such alien political and commercial control.
To suggest that “Britain’s sense of exclusivism has lived on in the form of resistance to the building or retaining of any links with the rest of Europe” is totally wrong.
The UK is a trading nation by nature.
The greatest achievement of Nigel Farage is releasing the British lion from its EU cage to trade freely with its Commonwealth and the rest of the world once more.
