Kantaphon, Pornpawee win National Badminton Titles
Teenage qualifier Kantaphon Wangcharoen and Pornpawee Chochuwong stole the limelight in the SCG All Thailand National Badminton Championships at the Badminton Training Centre at Naglinchee yesterday.
The 18-year-old former world junior No 1 Kantapon continued his unbeatable form in the tournament by staging a spectacular performance to upset world No 13 Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-17 18-21 22-20 in the exhilarating men’s singles final showdown that last for one hour and 25 minutes.
In the women’s singles final, 19-year-old Pornpawee successfully defended her crown following an upset win over world No 12 Busanan Ongbumrungpan 21-17 20-21 15-21 in the match that also needed more than an hour to decide the winner.
However there was no surprise in the mixed doubles as top pair Sapsiree Taerattanachai and Dechapol Puawaranukroh beat second seeded Bodin Issara and Savitree Amitrapai in two games 21-12 21-15.
Sapsiree also went on to claim her second title in the tournament as she teamed up with Puttita Supajirakul to beat Jongkolpan Kittitharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai 21-15 21-5.
Bodin later redeemed his pride in men’s doubles final, pairing with Nipitphon Puangpuapet to oust Kittisak Namdech and Tin Issariyanetr 21-17 10-21 21-17.
