The apocalyptic subtext to Pence’s support for Israel

Rabbi Meir Soloveichik is ecstatic that American evangelicals, speaking through US vice president Mike Pence, are enthusiastic about the establishment of the state of Israel. What he may not know is that the evangelicals are enthusiastic because they believe that the restoration of the Jews to their ancient homeland is a prerequisite for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Are Rabbi Meir and the Jewish people and the state of Israel keen to see a second coming by Jesus Christ?  
Probably not.  They would be keen to see the coming of the messiah, but they didn’t think Jesus was the messiah when he was here 2,000 years ago, and they are not likely to think he’s the messiah if he comes again. If he does come again, and if he does turn out to be the messiah in his second incarnation, their embarrassment is likely to be acute.
The whole business about the messiah and the second coming, like many religious delusions, is riddled with inconsistencies and improbabilities, not to mention impossibilities. If Jesus’ own prophecies, as recorded by his followers, are true, there won’t be anybody alive on earth to greet him when he comes again. There won’t be any sun. See Matthew 24: 3-31, and especially verse 29, “the sun will be darkened”. How is anybody going to be able to see, let alone live, if the sun has been darkened?  
Anybody who sees the Divine Hand in the restoration of the Jews to their ancient homeland is obliged to tell us where the Divine Hand was when Hitler was murdering six million Jews. Is it possible that the Divine Hand required the sacrifice of six million Jews as a prerequisite for restoring the survivors to their homeland? Such a staggering admission would leave us with a view of the divine nature too dreadful for anybody but the most callous to contemplate. But it might be consistent with that nature as it is depicted in the early books of the Bible.
