Re: “Erdogan’s plea for Syria masks his extermination of the Kurds”, Have Your Say, September 14.

I must agree that Erdogan is something of a jester, though I doubt he has a sense of humour.
In the past couple of weeks we have heard from several other jokers who probably did not mean to entertain but ... well, you be the judge:
The two Russian hitmen likely sent to England to poison a “traitor”, aka a person Vladimir Putin dislikes, said that they were tourists who were interested in the (non-Unesco heritage) sights in the English town of Salisbury.
Putin himself declared that Russia is not preparing to attack anyone. The people of Crimea tuned in and applauded the speech.
Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi (an obvious oxymoron) said the Rohingya catastrophe is only one of Myanmar’s many problems and hinted that it is not such a big deal. One doubts that this persecuted and abused minority saw the funny side of this statement.
The Chinese authorities denied there was any kind of persecution against the country’s Uighur ethnic group or that any had been sent to “re-education camps”.
Meanwhile US President Donald Trump’s jokes are too frequent to keep track of, but perhaps we might count among them the fact that he became president at all.
At the end of the day, all the jokes are on us.
