Bangkok’s sacred Lakshmi Shrine and Varalakshmi Vratam

While the district has long been famous for iconic landmarks like the Erawan Shrine's Lord Brahma, Thao Amarindrathiraj (Lord Indra), Narai Song Suban (Lord Vishnu riding on Garuda), Trimurti, Ganesha, Shiva, Uma Devi, and the Thao Jatulokbal (Four Guardian Kings), one particular deity has captured the imagination and deep devotion of the city in recent years is the Goddess Lakshmi.

Located on the 4th floor of Gaysorn Village, the Lakshmi Shrine has transformed into a vibrant sanctuary for modern spiritual seekers. In Hindu tradition, Goddess Lakshmi is celebrated as the divine consort of Lord Vishnu and the ultimate bestower of wealth, abundance, and prosperity.

Worshipping at the shrine follows a cherished and colourful tradition. Pilgrims typically offer fresh pink lotus flowers, symbolising purity, spiritual awakening, and material prosperity, make their offerings, and present their heartfelt wishes to the goddess with sincerity. 

Visitors dressing in pink or incorporating pink elements into their daily attire is also a common and vibrant sight, mirroring the aesthetic associated with the deity.

While everyday visits draw steady crowds of hopeful believers, the spiritual energy reaches a dramatic peak during the powerful annual Varalakshmi Vratam celebration. 

Observed once a year, this sacred Hindu ritual is dedicated to honouring Goddess Lakshmi in her form as the grantor of boons, drawing massive waves of worshippers eager to participate in the auspicious rites, traditional music, and classical Indian dance performances.

According to Sirima Limviriyalers, Head of Marketing and Augmentation at Gaysorn Village, Varalakshmi Vratam marks a deeply significant celebration tied to the goddess. 

"Today is the birthday of Phra Mae Lakshmi. So, this is so special because all you wish, Phra Mae will hear. And she will give you all the wishes that you want," she shares, emphasising that prayers on this auspicious day carry an intensified spiritual weight. "It's more like 10 times as powerful as a normal day."

The motivations drawing people to the shrine are as diverse as Bangkok itself. Whether visitors are seeking career advancement, financial stability, or romance, with many locals and tourists alike famously attributing successful relationships and finding long-term partners to their pilgrimage, the site remains a powerful cultural touchstone. 

As Sirima notes, people often come simply because they want "to be loved, right? To get the boyfriend, they always come here and get one."
