Missing the point about freedom of expression

Missing the point about freedom of expression

As a regular reader of The Nation, I am very sorry to learn that your columnist Pravit Rojanaphruk has resigned.

Following Pravit’s detention by the military last weekend, The Nation published an editorial expressing the importance of media freedom, but this sentiment does not seem to be shared by some of Pravit’s colleagues, who appear to be unhappy that he has been allowed to express opinions that differ from what they describe as the “consensus” held by a majority in society.
However, a majority view does not automatically constitute a “consensus”, and why should those expressing different views be muzzled, providing that no laws are infringed? Surely this undermines the very principle of freedom of expression. This is a difficult time for the media in Thailand.
