Burin, Songdej, Vint lit the way. Now it’s your turn…

Re: “Obama’s dismal record on nukes”, Letters, May 9, and other recent letters first published in regional newspapers.

It pains me greatly to see the esteemed editors of this column poaching letters from other newspapers to provide adequate intellectual fodder for their readers. Does Bangkok, the premier city of the Orient, not possess sufficient literary talent to sate our lust for epistolary excellence? Is our cupboard so bare that we must plunder the fens and boondocks of Karachi, Kuala Lumpur and Hokkaido for sustenance?
Granted, readers may tire of all the usual back-and-forth about the junta and its works. We may weary of repeated exhortations to “go vegan”, and to heed the inalienable requirements of democracy. We may even overdose on the age-old mantra telling us that if foreigners don’t like it here, they can always go home. But surely, in the seething intellectual ferment that is Bangkok, there must be mighty minds of sufficient depth and penetration to edify us with original thoughts on a wide range of meaty topics. Burin Kantabutra and Songdej Praditsmanont have lit the way. Now let legions of local literary lights arise and follow as their disciples to blaze new trails in the field of dynamic letter-writing.
