Those who back coup plots who must look in the mirror

Re: “Erdogan must look in the mirror”, Editorial, July 31.

The editorial raises very serious doubts about whether the writer comprehends what actually transpired in Turkey on July 15. We would like to convey our views and the facts on the true nature of the Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organisation (FETO). We hope The Nation will take these into serious consideration and publish this letter accordingly.
The bloody coup attempt was actually an act of terror against Turkey’s democratic and legitimate government and its constitutional order. The perpetrators shot at civilians and bombed the national parliament (Grand National Assembly) and the office of the presidency.
The Turkish people, in order to defend and protect their democracy, bravely took to the streets and stood up against the tanks. As a result, 237 people lost their lives and became martyrs. More than 2,500 were wounded. A faction within the armed forces loyal to FETO committed this act of terror. It is quite clear from the testimonies of the plotters that they were acting on orders from FETO. The aide-de-camp to the armed forces chief of general staff confessed to being a member of FETO, that he executed orders from his Glenist superiors.
According to the testimonies, the plotters even tried to force the chief of the armed forces to speak on the telephone to Fethullah Gulen, hoping to persuade him to join in their coup attempt. Against this background, all four parties represented in the National Assembly condemned in the strongest terms the attempted coup and stood by the democratically elected government. The entire nation rallied to support the government and the constitutional order.
Such adherence to democracy proves that what has happened in Turkey is definitely not a political battle between “two factions”, as very ignorantly alleged in the editorial, but was indeed a secretive organisation’s assault on Turkish constitutional order, democracy and its open society. Moreover, Fethullah Glen is not a “political rival” of President Erdogan, as also very ignorantly stated in the editorial. The “Glen Movement” is a conspiratorial cult that runs a secretive transnational network aiming to overthrow the democratic secular regime.
The ongoing investigations and ensuing legal process against the coup plotters will further bring to the surface the true nature of this sinister group. The argument that there is a purging of people who supported Glen is not credible amid all the evidence.
The editorial further alleges, “After all, people want to court the winner and they don’t see Erdogan as the winner, not now anyway, because the battle, it seems, is far from over.”
By asserting there is a political “battle” in Turkey between the legitimate government and the coup conspirators of the Fethullah Glen terrorist organisation, this unfortunate editorial once again serves to legitimise a terror network.
In the end, Turkish people from different walks of life and different political backgrounds united in defending their democracy. It is the strong spirit of patriotism and the will power of people that foiled this coup attempt. They have been rallying every night since then. The signed copy of the Joint Declaration of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and its English translation are attached herewith for your referral. In fact, those who support coup plotters and terrorists must look in the mirror.
