Electoral college prevents tyranny of the majority

Electoral college prevents tyranny of the majority

Re: “CNN coverage based on popular vote is unfair”, Letters, December 3.

Simon Ordsall doesn’t seem to understand my country when he calls the US voting majority “right-thinking people”.
America’s Founding Fathers realised that theirs would be a large land of very diverse peoples and, naturally, that a few states would carry much of the population. The people of populous New York and California have little in common with those of Wyoming, and the Electoral College exists to give small states a shot at tipping the election result – which about 15 of them did last month.
A pure popular-vote system is not democracy but simply tyranny of the majority, which is the worst tyranny of all.
Meanwhile, by trotting out a few tame academics, CNN and the media were not “speaking truth to power”. In fact this was the stuff of bias that prevented them from forecasting the most dramatic election-night disaster in US history.
