US system defies reform

US system defies reform

Re: “Electoral college system needs to be fine-tuned”, Letters, January 2.

Siraphop C says the US electoral college should be reformed to reflect the will of the people. The only way to do that would be to split up its votes in each state instead of winner-take-all. So, for example, if Hillary Clinton won 55 per cent of the vote in New York, she would get 55 per cent of the electoral-college votes from that state instead of 100 per cent. But even that wouldn’t work: If a candidate got 55 per cent of the vote in a state that has 10 electoral college votes, you would then give him or her six electoral-college votes – that would be 60 per cent, not 55. When you have an evil, stupid system as the electoral college, you can’t reform it. But you can end it.
