Community concerns as art

Community concerns as art

The US Embassy Bangkok joins with the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) for “River Health”, a media art exhibition running at the BACC from June 22 to 30.

The works are the result of an American Arts Incubator project, an exchange programme designed to help local communities address social issues using digital and new media art.
US art envoy Scott Kildall led a workshop for 50 Thai artists and youth to investigate Bangkok’s rivers and canals and turned the data collected into artworks. The objective is to stimulate a conversation around the effects of rapid development and industrialisation.
Based in San Francisco, Kildall is a cross-disciplinary artist who writes algorithms that transform various datasets into 3D sculptures and installations. The resulting artworks often invite public participation through direct interaction. His work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the New York Hall of Science, Transmediale, the Venice Biennale and the San Jose Museum of Art. He has received fellowships, awards and residencies from many organisations.
The exhibition opening will be held on June 22 at 6.30pm. The event is free and open to the public. The BACC is at Bangkok’s Pathumwan intersection and open daily except Monday from 10am to 9pm. Find out more at (02) 214 6630-8 or visit www.Bacc.or.th.
