Memorable portrayals of late King in Bangsai ceramics show

Memorable portrayals of late King in Bangsai ceramics show

Last call for viewing the “Ceramic Art” exhibition of 120 lovely pieces crafted at the Bangsai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre for Her Majesty the Queen’s Support Foundation.

The show in Siam Paragon’s Lifestyle Hall ends tomorrow. Pop in anytime from 10 to 7.
The porcelain creations are also on sale, and a portion of the proceeds goes to the foundation.
“This remarkable exhibition prioritises preservation and the inheritance of unique traditional crafts,” says Bangsai Centre vice president Professor Thanin Kraivichien.
“The handmade creations are in touch with the contemporary era, which is the reason Thai earthenware is renowned and highly valued the world over.
“This exhibition showcases a collection of the best ceramic crafts made by our master craftsmen and apprentices. The quality and artistic value of these earthenware pieces have been recognised nationally with multiple awards in various ceramics competitions. So this is a good opportunity for Thais and foreigners alike to admire these precious works of art that reflect our cultural roots.”
One of the highlights of the show is titled “Following in the King’s Footsteps”, made especially for display and sale at the exhibition.
Cement rather than clay was sculpted into the statue of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol, complete with ornate depictions of his best-known undertakings – windmills, vetiver grass, moisture-retention dams and rainmaking.
The use of cement as the main material is an unusual technique in sculpture, but gives the statue added durability as well as an intriguing hue.
Also of note is the metal sculpture “Knowledge, Passion and Unity” by Panom Samatong, who heads the ceramics department at Bangsai.
Inspired by the late monarch’s philosophy on life, Panom seeks to convey its applicability in every situation. He conceived fresh techniques to use in tandem with blow-welding to enhance and sharpen the metal’s texture and “thermal-sprayed” oil paint for more vivid colouring.
Visitors will also see large ceramic pots, speckled-leaf dishes and many remarkable paintings and can buy a hand-painted T-shirt individualised with an exclusive print design.
