Art exhibitions you should not miss
Anupong Chantorn returns to Ardel Gallery of Modern Art this month with a new solo show, “The Land of Virtue – The Land of Karma”. It runs from August 24 through October 1. Best known for his controversial painting “Monks as Crows”, the artist remains focused on perceptions of good and bad as sifted through religious belief. Be prepared for more raised eyebrows. Bangkok City City Gallery will host the group show “To Whom It May Concern” from Wednesday through September 3. Art researcher Judha Su organised the exhibition, asking what critical enquiries are shared among artists of a certain generation. Kittisak Chonthong, Chulayarnnon Siriphol, Namfon Udomlertlak, Nuttapon Sawasdee, Pisitakun Kuntalang and Sina Wittayawiroj are the artists. Elaine Ho from Hong Kong, Jong Pairez from Tokyo and the School of Improper Education in Yogyakarta are also participating. The deer that ‘went inter’
Sakarin Krue-on revisits the Bangkok art scene with “A Talebearer’s Tale” at Tang Contemporary Art gallery from August 16 through September 23. It will offer a fresh perspective of his previous “Monument of Awakening Era” porcelain-antlers installation unveiled at the 2012 Busan Biennale. This is Sakarin again fondly recalling his first encounter with a Schomburgk’s deer at a Paris museum. Mounted for display, the animal was native to central Thailand, but in its story the artist finds glimpses of a peaceful and righteous way of life. Find out more at www.TangContemporary.com.
Gardens full of life
Slovenian-born Tjasa Iris is showing “Gardens of Eden: Paintings from a New Dimension” in the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre People’s Gallery until August 27. Bright lighting and vivid colours characterise her lush garden landscapes, with techniques rooted in European expressionism. Iris has been living in Southeast Asia for most of the past eight years.
