Conspiracy theorist torpedoed by facts of WWII history
Re: “Europe is being destroyed”, Letters, August 20.
HHB would have us believe that Britain used the “Balfour Declaration” to trick America into declaring war on Germany in April 1917. In fact, America finally took this step because of the ever-increasing frequency of attacks on US merchant ships by German U-boats. But, like other conspiracy theorists, HHB will spin his web of deceit, untroubled by the real events of history. It is noticeable that such people also seem to attribute so many of the world’s problems to the Jews: only recently JC Wilcox ludicrously asserted that all the world’s banks – including central banks – are owned or controlled by the Rothschild family. Anti-Semitism is a stain on the human conscience that seemingly cannot be eradicated.
What a pity it is too that so few letters now address the troubling issues afflicting present-day Thailand, not least the ever increasing attempts to stifle free speech and individual liberty. Instead we have to endure tit-for-tat exchanges on past and present events affecting Europe and the US. But of course, however crazy the views on these subjects, they are unlikely to result in a period of “attitude adjustment”, so I suppose we just have to grin and bear it.
