Human trafficking and how corporations can help

Human trafficking and how corporations can help

CSR Asia Summit 2017, the annual leading conference on corporate social responsibility in Asia, will take place next month in Bangkok. Covering 22 topical and emerging sustainability themes, the summit includes a focus on human trafficking, which will be led by subject experts and business leaders.

Human trafficking is a pressing danger for Asia. In July, Thailand saw its largest ever human trafficking case, which resulted in a high ranking former general and 61 other defendants being convicted and sentenced for their part in trafficking Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshis as part of a crime syndicate. This case has highlighted the scale and scope of the activity taking place in the region.

The verdict and sentences are being seen as a milestone in Thailand’s ongoing efforts to eradicate human trafficking and they represent an important step in efforts to combat human trafficking in Thailand and the wider region.

“There is a very real need to be aware of the potential risks of human trafficking as companies can find themselves as unwilling or unknowing counterparts in supply chains where victims of human trafficking might be found” says Dr Richard Welford, chairman and founder of CSR Asia.

“The repercussions for companies can be huge and awareness of these risks can help companies avoid reputational damage, business interruptions, potential lawsuits, community conflicts, protests and a loss of consumer trust, all of which can impact on financial performance.”

Human trafficking and much more will be discussed at the summit, which will take place at The Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok on September 26-27. The event includes a stream of supply chain and human rights workshops and interactive sessions.
