Why Thailand’s nuclear sector is safe (so far)

Re: “Russian nuclear tech for Thailand”, The Nation, September 9.

“Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation and Kinetics Corporation Ltd (Thailand) will supply a cyclotron complex with radiochemical laboratories to the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT)”, The Nation reports.
If I lived in Nakon Nayok I would move, nothing good is
going to come out of this.

Too late to avoid a nuclear accident in Thailand. From Wikipedia:
“A radiation accident occurred in Samut Prakan Province in January-February 2000. The accident happened when an insecurely stored unlicensed cobalt-60 radiation source was recovered by scrap metal collectors.”
Although Thailand already has its own research reactor at the above-mentioned TINT, and there have been no problems with that since 1962.

Russian technology? Chernobyl comes to mind.

There was nothing wrong with the technology it was the engineer in charge of a particular shift who was to blame, human error and arrogance happen.

Cyclotrons are particle accelerators (such as protons). They are used in various fields of research. Some are used to treat cancer where a beam of protons is focused on the cancer. Other uses are astrophysics, etc.

Ticking time bomb if they get their hands on anything like this. Not unless someone teaches the meaning of due diligence and professional maintenance.

Not sure what you mean. This is not connected to fission or nuclear weapons. The main danger is lack of adequate shielding and proper maintenance where the workers or the patients in the direct local environment might be exposed to extra levels of radiation. During proton or positron production (a positron is the anti partner of the electron) some gamma radiation may escape (other forms of radiation have a short effective distance). Other countries in Asia have many units, so there is no shortage of expertise and training programmes.
