Try tea to tone down your apocalyptic vision

Try tea to tone down your apocalyptic vision

Re: Bowed in shame, not submission (Your Say, September 23)

JC Wilcox is clearly well versed in the arcane subject of conspiracy theories, although I must admit that the one surrounding the untimely demise of US General Patton is more intriguing than most. Certainly, if Patton really believed that by declaring war on Nazi Germany we had picked the wrong enemy, then he needed to be rapidly removed as Commander of the US Zone of Occupation in post-war Germany.
In his usual purple prose, Wilcox then gives us yet another over-the-top account of the supposedly parlous and abject state of the UK and Europe, overlooking the fact that we “spineless, unprincipled, indoctrinated clowns” in Britain recently voted by a small but clear margin to throw off the shackles of the overly bureaucratic and undemocratic European Union, and chart a brighter future for our nation.
I do worry about Mr Wilcox’s state of mind, and would like to offer him a piece of advice. During the 19th century, my fellow Scotsmen (we have traditionally been an enterprising and widely travelled people) were largely responsible for establishing vast tea estates in India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) which continue to produce excellent teas. Many of these estates, I am pleased to say, retain their original Scottish names, despite having been locally owned for decades.
Good quality tea is a refreshing beverage, especially in hot, tropical climes, and is well known for inducing feelings of happiness, contentment and goodwill. It might also lead him to adopt a less Apocalyptic vision of our admittedly troubled world.
