The simple formula for Jerusalem that Trump ignored
Re: “Ignoring East Jerusalem is a capital crime”, Have Your Say, yesterday.
I am confused by Andy Leiter’s letter. First he commends Donald Trump for saying he recognises Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. But then, to his credit, he admits that East Jerusalem is essentially Muslim and Arab territory.
Nowhere in Trump’s speech did he make any distinction between West Jerusalem and East Jerusalem. Wouldn’t it have been a great act of statesmanship if he had said he would recognise West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as soon as East Jerusalem becomes the capital of a future Palestinian state? Just think of how much violence could have been avoided if he had just said that.
