Humanity perhaps given more credit than due

Humanity perhaps given more credit than due

Re: “So what if cavemen were carnivores!” Have Your Say, February 19.

Anthropocentricity at its finest! “We humans are capable of planning, solving problems by an intelligent process.” Really? Try telling that to ordinary people in western Europe or bomb victims in the Middle East. “We... are aware of our surroundings.” I’m not sure whether Greenpeace, International Rivers, WWF or countless other environmental groups would concur with that. “We possess morality.” And with those words, we realise that the writer, Egon, is taking the mickey. Or is he? I put forward the alternative proposition – that humanity is the biggest threat to life on the planet as we know it. If Egon is serious in what he says, I think he needs to get out more.
