Our fellow animals are not ours to exploit

Our fellow animals are not ours to exploit

Re: “Like all extremists, PETA peddles a bleak vision of life”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Robin Grant thinks it’s terrible that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wants to stop baby calves from being killed so their milk can be consumed by humans who have absolutely no need of it; and wants to stop wild animals from being needlessly deprived of their freedom and all semblance of a natural life in zoos; and wants to stop the torture of fish – otherwise known as angling; and wants to stop the exploitation and killing of horses in the name of entertainment; and would like to see the practice of pet-keeping come to an end. My job takes me into many backyards, and I have seen so many sad and unloved pets that I have to agree with them regarding this. I’ve seen rabbits crammed in small cages almost hidden by long grass, dogs pacing around backyards with nothing to see or do all day, and birds – who should be flying – languishing alone in small cages.
The animals with whom we share this planet do not belong to us. They have their own lives to lead and their own things to do. We have no right to cruelly exploit any of them for own purposes.
