Farming is a regulated business run for profit

Farming is a regulated business run for profit

I was stunned by Simon Ordsall’s letter. He finds Jenny Moxham’s choice to call forced artificial insemination “rape” offensive.

In industrial dairies the huge herds of dairy cows are forced to produce calves each year at specific times (the males called “bobby calves” are considered wastage and killed within days of birth).
Most dairy farms are run on a regimented schedule, as profit is the driver. We speak of the “rape of the earth” – an act of plunder, abuse and violation – so “rape” is used in a context not only applying to humans. I can assure you, Mr Ordsall, that I am a real person who happens to love animals. I have educated myself about issues adversely affecting animals.
We live in different states of Australia, so I have never met Jenny Moxham. I hope one day I will, as I totally agree with her amazing writing in order to help our exploited fellow earthlings.
As for needing to feed the world’s burgeoning populations, Mr Ordsall, crops fed indirectly through animals could be fed directly to hungry humans, in a more sustainable, less ecosystem-damaging and kinder manner.
