Reporting ban on Robinson trial a travesty of justice

Reporting ban on Robinson trial a travesty of justice

Re: “Weinstein, infamous face of #MeToo movement, now faces the public”, World, May 29.

Last month film mogul Harvey Weinstein appeared in court to face charges of sexual misconduct. He also faced a media scrum in the courtroom, and, “... the moment also offered an opportunity for the public to confront Weinstein”, according to the Washington Post.
Let us bear in mind that Weinstein is innocent until proven guilty. On the same day in Leeds, UK, the British public was not “offered the opportunity to confront” the defendants in a criminal trial.
Tommy Robinson, a reporter and campaigner against child abuse, was arrested for a
“breach of the peace” for breaking the reporting ban by filming outside the Leeds courtroom. In what’s being regarded as a travesty of justice that has sparked protests around the world, the court also initially imposed a reporting ban on Robinson’s arrest and trial.
